I. ensata "Japanese Flag" (Syn. I. kaempferi) Japanese gardeners began collecting plants of I. ensata from the wild over 800 years ago and hybridizing has made them one of the most fascinating rhizomatous iris. The orchid-like flowers, often up to 10 inches in diameter, are renowned for their rich colors, unusual veined markings and crepe-like texture. The 24 to 30 inch stems, generally branched, bear one or two flowers. Colors range from red-violet to blue, purple and white, many bicolored. Prefers evenly moist, slightly acid soil. They tolerate boggy conditions well.
