African Lily, Lily of the Nile - Widely grown for their showy flowers, this South African genus is a tender perennial with a fleshy root. Rising above the clumps of dark green lance-like foliage are stiff, bare stalks that produce globe-shaped 4 to 8 inch flower heads. The many individual flowers are funnel shaped and bloom for up to two months. Best grown in containers in colder areas so they can be brought indoors for cold periods. An ideal garden plant in the deep South. Roots prefer to be left undisturbed.
